NEWS: The US Department of State (DOS) has amended its regulations and has extended the permitted program duration from three to five years for J-1 Exchange Visitors in the Professor and Research Scholar Categories. The five year period is not an aggregate of five years. It is a continuous five-year period given to a participant on a "use or lose" basis. This new rule also establishes new eligibility requirements for repeat participation as a J-1 professor or researcher. Repeat participation can occur only following a 24-month bar before beginning a new J-1 program.
J regulations have not changed for J-1 Short-term Scholars.
